Recreational Restoration

Logging companies, such as Miller Timber Services in Philomath, contract log but are also hired to do restoration projects around the state of Oregon. This specific restoration project will widen the meadows atop Mary’s Peak for visitors to enjoy.

Loggers Charlie Richmond and Kyle Garrett from Miller Timber Services Inc. have begun a restoration project to widen the meadow for visitors atop Mary’s Peak State Park.
As a logger and wildland firefighter, Kyle Garrett is a true steward of Oregon’s forests. Loggers have to be in peak condition and well equipped for a long days work, starting at 5 AM and ending at 4 PM during the dry season.
Kyle Garrett bucks limbs off a pile of felled trees. This is an essential process, as it allows for easy transportation of the trees from Mary’s Peak, and because the trees cannot have limbs when they go through the sawmill.
On larger jobs, heavy machinery is used to buck limbs from felled trees. For the Mary’s Peak restoration project, loggers use Stihl chainsaws in order to minimize environmental impact.
Lead Logger, Andrew Bird and site manager Mike Chapman from Miller Timber Services Inc. brief and debrief at the beginning and end of the work day. Loggers work in isolated groups, which makes this communication essential.
